Kol Hadash at Temple Beth Torah

It is good to thank You, O Lord...[with] the sound of the ten-string lyre, with voice and the music of the harp.
---Psalm 92, The Sabbath Psalm

Adding musical instruments to a Friday service is not new. Nor is making the music lively and engaging. Nor is adding original music alongside traditional melodies to keep the service fresh. None of these things is new.

What Temple Beth Torah is doing with them is new.

Welcome to Kol Hadash, A New Voice, featuring the Shabbat-Tones, a gifted musical ensemble breathing life into Friday evening worship. A repeated niggun, a wordless melody introduced at the start of the service at 6 pm, weaves the Kabbalat Shabbat psalms and prayers together in a single, continuous stream of music and prayer. Traditional tunes are combined with melodies written expressly for Kol Hadash. The result - a service that's both new and old, familiar but fresh every week. And the congregation has responded. Since Kol Hadash began a few weeks ago, attendance at the Friday service has increased over 300%.

The Shabbat-Tones are Seth Hertz (bass), Steve Segerman (djembe), Jon Shutman (flute), Anne Siegel (percussion), Cantor Bruce Siegel (guitar), and Eric Boden (substitute drummer). All are seasoned musicians who give worshippers a Shabbat experience full of spirituality and joy.

Activities and responsibilities pull family members in different directions all week. Kol Hadash brings families together through the words of our past and the music of our present.
